Doctor Thomas John Barnardo was a Victorian social entrepreneur best known for rescuing homeless & afflicted children from the streets. He died in the year previous to this mailing, so the postcard may be part of a fund-raising campaign launched immediately thereafter to fill the void caused by the loss of his considerable fund-raising skills & connections.
