"921. PARIS-Moderne - Les femmes cochers / Hé cochère ! Êtes vous libre? C. M." man hails a female driving a fiacre, asking if she is free; carte postale with subtle colors mailed 1909 from Paris to Portland Maine, stamp removed with slight thinning to the back paper, light toning both sides. The question in the caption is the beginning of at least one French joke: when the cabby replies that she is, the rejoinder is 'Alors, vive la liberté!' or 'Then long live liberty!' with so many double-entrendres that we dare not list them here. $20.00 tf(p)h

"A 4-11 FIRE ALARM, CHICAGO." signed art (looks like A. Fleury) depicting a horse-drawn fire engine racing towards a nearby blaze, postcard from V. O. Hammon (their number 518 on back), used there 1908, extensive toning on back, sender's message in the sky (permitted then) disparages the city. We doubt this postcard got much use or further printing; it was just too hard to read messages against the almost-all-dark colors. $10.00 fhi

"A C Wilson. returned cases to a customer at Peebles Ohio." showing a side view of the horse-drawn wagon with him standing beside it; Cyko real photo postcard. Albert 'Bert' C. Wilson was about 30 years old when this obviously unique photo was taken; his descendants are still prominent in that community. The best Adams County postcard we have ever seen. Sold but still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $2.00 o(p)hg

& the nearby North Beach area. Note the unusual placement
of the horse beside the car, instead of in front or in back.

"CAPO'S NORTH BEACH R. R. / HARRIS" showing the horse-drawn trolley fully loaded with well-dressed passengers on tracks connecting Saint Augustine Florida to the nearby North Beach area. Unused sepia-tone real photo Cyko postcard with good contrast & focus, trivial corner wear. A little pen writing neatly near the bottom edge: "OK Show" probably a photographer's proof offered to the Capo family that never made it to commercial postcard status -- at least when we looked we could not find a single example exhibited or offered on the internet.

"Carro Siciliano" color, unused Cecami 691, showing colorful horse-drawn cart, good edges. Post card sold. Still available for scholarly study & research as a full-size 72-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $1.50 sh

"CHEMICAL ENGINE No 2 / BELLAIRE FIRE DEP'T. / 182345 Bellaire, Ohio" with 2 horses pulling specialized equipment manufactured by Merryweather & Sons 1902 - 1914. The top fitting behind the drivers carried a lead bottle of sulfuric acid (punctured by turning a handle at the rear), which reacted with a water/bicarbonate solution in the lower rear copper cylinder causing carbon dioxide gas to expel the liquid at high pressure. For communities that could afford such specialization, fire fighters could provide near-instant response on arrival at a fire scene, whilst other engines were delayed getting their connections to a hydrant. There is a long horizontal crease which will not occupy your attention for long; the back is toned; the corners are rounded; the cancel is indistinct, but the message is dated January 22 1910. The only other such postcard we have seen was in a museum, and definitely not for sale. Our idea of a firefighting postcard! $100.00 fho(b)

"Cutting Spring Wheat at Mac Leod, Alta." with a team of 4 horses pulling the reaper, unused private post card published by Stedman Brothers (their number S B 1877 on back), light album marks at the corners, small upper corner crease, back paper browning evenly with age (circa 1910), pen stroke over the head of one horse. Now a residential neighborhood near Edmonton, we see the name spelled McLeod. Uncommon; we could not find it offered or shown anywhere on the internet when we looked. $9.00 a(m)ah

"Dayton, Covington And Piqua Traction Co. / FREIGHT STATION. / Fast Freight and Express Service To All Points North, South, East And West" including 3 horse-drawn wagons backed into the station & an interurban waiting for a load; unused Azo (triangles up) real photo post card with wonderful contrast, composition & focus; good edges. Annotated on the back in pencil by a local historian who we know to be reliable: "Dayton, Ohio - N. W. Corner of Ludlow and Stout St. / Ticket Office 32 Ludlow at Arcade Entrance". Most likely one-of-a-kind: no publisher or photographer credit, & no caption as a commercial product would have. Belongs in a museum. $100.00 o(d)r(d)h

Roberts of Winchester Massachusetts. Sender comments she has had a ride on it, and disparages Fryeburg as 'the dullest place on earth'. Corners rounded mildly, bottom corner crease not into the image, a little edge wear, long internal creases in the upper left front, as is. Hard to find in any condition. $12.00 m(f)h

Uncaptioned sepia-tone real photo post card showing a uniformed fireman ready to drive a coach-like vehicle pulled by 2 horses, intricate fittings for multiple hoses at the side of the vehicle--to allow several shorter hoses to be hooked up to a feeder hose coming from a distant hydrant. Contrast is excellent & depth of field is too. We have never seen the likes of this vehicle before.
