HOCKING-SUNDAY CREEK
TRACTION COMPANY. Uncaptioned real photo postcard of its clean & glistening
interurban car with dignitaries posed around it, the letters H S and C
intertwined in a monogram plain over their shoulders; mailed 3/8/10 from
Nelsonville (abbreviated Nels. by sender) with Columbus & Athens RPO
handstamp clearly applied, to Greenfield Ohio. Excellent composition,
depth-of-field & contrast. Sender writes in part: 'Some class to our new
street car'. The line was planned to run from Nelsonville to Athens by way
of Doanville, Floodwood & Chaunsey; it was chartered in 1909. Volume 34 of
Engineering & Contracting, page 29, reported on November 23rd of 1910 the
part of that line was already "completed & in operation for a distance of
3.3 miles from Nelsonville", bonds to be issued for the rest. Sunday Creek
was an underground & surface coal-mining area that left a sad environmental
legacy. Traffic was mostly coal miners & their families according to George
W. Hilton's 'The Individual Interurbans', page 272. The postmark we report
here was used on a segment of the Hocking Valley Railway. Probably unique,
this postcard has no caption, and no attribution to a photographer or
publisher. It is possible that the sender himself amateurishly added some
light green & blue color in the background trees to suggest leaves & sky. The best
Athens County postcard we have ever seen in anyone's stock.
