captured by the German cruiser Moewe and sailed to then-neutral United
States. The US District Court ordered her return to the owning company, and
it sailed as the Mandingo until the WWI armistice (after which she again

General's right arm is visible; that arm was lost when he led a French expeditionary force
at the Dardanelles in 1915. He commanded the 4th Army mentioned in the caption till the
end of World War I, and later served as a one-time member of the supreme war

Moonshiners" real photos picturing two tents (one with
indicated caption in banner), some men, a dog
& a flag. One mailed Sep 1917
at Chillicothe Ohio has a little edge wear
& message stating there were 15,000 there. The other an unmailed CYKO, with album marks on back.
What these show are the tents of some of the 15,000
workers (not soldiers, soldier trainees were not allowed to bring pets) who
arrived there to build Camp Sherman for training World War I soldiers. The
first of more than 120,000 men trained there left for Europe later, in June
1918. Obviously unique. Both

mailed JU 13 10 from Durban Natal (bold cancel ties 1-d King stamp, partial arrival
marking next day) to Ladysmith Natal, minor wear & rounding to bottom corners, trace of cancel ink on front , faint album impressions at the corners. Mailed just after her transfer to East Africa service; later, serving as a

service..." with many men crowded on deck, unused Azo (triangles both ways) postcard,
rounded corners. Extensive light soil on both sides, but could be mostly cleaned up with
patience & a very soft eraser. Necessarily between December 1918 & July 1919, when

"U.S.S. WEST-MADAKET In the Port of Rotterdam / 1-18-19" unused real
photo postcard, image printed at an angle to the edges, noticeable edge wear
& toning both sides. Commissioned in late October 1918, this was her first
(delivering flour) of only 2 trips in World War I; decommissioning was in
May 1919. We doubt there are many photos of this ship from that brief period
in existence. This Liberty Ship was later to be torpedoed in the Atlantic,
